Cisco LAN switches use two criteria to decide how to forward a frame. They check the source MAC address of the frame to decide if the frame is new. If the frame is new, they check the destination MAC address to decide if the frame needs to be sent out on a certain port.

There are two criteria that are used by a Cisco LAN switch to decide how to forward Ethernet frames: destination MAC address, and source MAC address. If the destination MAC address is the same as the source MAC address, then the frame is sent to the port that the source device is connected to.
