Clean the dark areas of the floor with mineral spirits or acetone to remove stains on the wood. If the stain is resistant to these chemicals, or you have applied a polyurethane finish on the floor, lightly sand the area with 180 grit sandpaper by hand, and then recolor it with the stain coating.

To fix a stain, first use a rag to wipe away as much excess as possible. Then, use a chemical solution to treat the stain. If the stain is tea or coffee, use a solution of oxalic acid or sodium hydroxide.

Wipe dark areas of the floor with mineral spirits or acetone to lift the stain from the wood. If the stain resists these chemicals or if a polyurethane topcoat has already been applied to the floor, lightly sand the area by hand with 180-grit sandpaper. Stain the area again with one coat of stain.
