I fixed the problem by going to my DNS and adding the MX record for the subdomain mg.example.com and it started to work once the record changes were propagated. In the fourth item of the verification process, mailgun does suggest that an MX record be added for your domain

To fix this error, all you need to do is go to Mailgun and log in to your account. Once you’re logged in, click on the domain you need to work on and then click the DNS tab.

Fixing a 550 error is fairly simple. The first thing you need to do is make sure you’re sending mail through Mailgun and not directly through your mail server. To do this, you’ll need to create an MX record through your domain registrar.

I have a mail server and a mailgun account. I use mailgun to send out my newsletter. Every once in a while I get a 550 error with the following text: "550-5.1.1 The email account that you tried to reach does not exist.

In mailgun, if you are using custom domain, you need to add your domain to the CNAME file using command line.
