The government spends about $US8 billion a year subsidizing products like fuel, food, and medicine.

the egyptian budget is divided into two parts. The first part is the “budget of expenditures” which includes the cost of running the government, paying salaries, etc. The second part is the “budget of revenues” and includes taxes, fees, fines, etc.

Egypt’s subsidy system is a major point of contention in the country’s economic reform efforts.  Egypt’s subsidies amounted to $23 billion in 2015, and the government had to borrow $2 billion from local banks to pay for them.
