There are eight pairs of spinal nerves in the cervical region of the spinal cord. The cervical region of the spinal cord extends from the base of the skull to the first vertebrae of the neck. The spinal cord itself is made up of 31 segments, and each segment is connected to a pair of spinal nerves.

Each pair connects the spinal cord with a specific region of the body. Near the spinal cord each spinal nerve branches into two roots.
