The human body is approximately 60% water and when you take into account water you’re drinking, water you’re breathing, water you’re excreting, and water you’re sweating you can see how important having enough water in your system is.

The amount of time water takes to travel through the body depends on where the water is coming from and where it’s going. Water that you drink will travel through the digestive system and exit the body through urine.

A glass of water will take roughly 21 seconds to make its way through your body. The water will start out in your mouth, where it will be mixed with your saliva and begin to dissolve some of the food particles in your teeth. Then it will be swallowed and will make its way down your esophagus and into your stomach.

It takes about an hour for a glass of water to go through your body. The water goes through your blood stream and ends up back in your body as urine.

The kidneys start to filter the water out of the blood almost immediately. Within about 20 minutes, 80% of the water you drink has passed through the kidneys and out of the body as urine.
