How does a fluorochrome’s emission spectrum differ from its excitation (absorption) spectrum?

Fluorochromes are dyes that have specific emission and excitation spectra. That means that when they are excited by certain wavelengths of light, they emit light at specific wavelengths. But when they are exposed to light that is outside of their excitation spectrum, they do not absorb the light and emit light at all.
