I’m a perfectionist, so it’s incredibly important for me to be constantly improving and getting better. To do this, I started by identifying my personal development areas. For me, this is really about four key areas: professional development, physical health, emotional health, and spiritual health.

Every year, I take some time to look at my personal development areas and I write them down in my diary. I’ve learned that I’m very good at identifying areas for improvement at the start of a new year but it’s harder to keep up with it as the year goes on.

We all have things that we’d like to work on. It could be something big or small. It could be something that we’re aware of or something that’s subconscious. Personally, I’ve been working on overcoming my fear of public speaking through Toastmasters.

An important part of being a good leader is knowing how to admit when you’re wrong. I’m always looking for ways to improve, and this means that I need to be able to listen to criticism and take it on board.

One of the best ways to tackle a personal development area you’re not happy with is to find the root cause of it. For example, if you’re feeling insecure about how to talk to new people, the root cause might be that you’re not practising talking to new people enough.
